U.S. President Donald Trump said Israel's strike on Beirut's southern suburbs "should not have happened," arguing it risked undermining efforts to finalize a peace agreement with Iran.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Israel has the right to defend itself but described the attack that prompted the strike as "very small and meaningless," noting that no one was killed or injured. He urged all sides to stand down, saying there should be no further attacks by Israel in Lebanon or by Hezbollah against Israel.
Trump said a deal was "very close" and could bring peace to the region, including Lebanon, adding: "This could be the beginning of a long and beautiful peace — let's not blow it."
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Iran would need to restrain Hezbollah if it wants a prospective agreement with Washington to endure.
Speaking on CBS' Face the Nation, Hegseth said: "If Iran wants this to hold, they need to pull back Hezbollah."
The comments came after Hegseth said earlier that the U.S.-Iran deal remains on track despite the Israeli strike on Beirut's southern suburbs and that Israel had acted "very measured[ly]" given that the sides are "on the verge of a deal."
Iran had been conveying messages to the United States through Qatari mediators before the Israeli strike on Beirut's southern suburbs, a source close to the negotiations told Iran's Fars news agency.
Fars also cited its correspondent as saying Iran is currently communicating its preferred terms to Washington through a Qatari team in Tehran and that no final agreement has yet been reached.
The IDF said Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir is holding ongoing assessments with senior commanders following the Israeli strike in Beirut's southern suburbs and that the military is preparing for the possibility of fire toward Israel in the coming hours.
Following the assessment, the Home Front Command updated its guidelines through Monday evening, allowing gatherings of up to 5,000 people nationwide, except in communities adjacent to the northern border, where existing restrictions remain in place.
The military said it remains on high alert and is prepared for a range of defensive and offensive scenarios, while urging the public to follow Home Front Command instructions.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said President Donald Trump remains intent on finalizing an agreement with Iran on Sunday, despite what he described as difficult negotiations.
Speaking on ABC's This Week, Waltz said Iranian negotiators have struggled to obtain guidance from Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and are "not always on the same page" internally. Still, he said he is confident the deal can be completed, adding that both Trump and the negotiating team "have every intent on getting this done today."
Waltz also said Trump has made clear that any agreement must require Iran to give up its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, end its enrichment capabilities and halt support for regional armed groups, including Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis and Iraqi militias. Asked whether Iran had agreed to those conditions, Waltz replied: "All of those things, they are agreeing to."
Israel's Foreign Ministry accused Iran of lying in response to criticism from senior Iranian officials over the Israeli strike on Beirut's southern suburbs.
In a post on X, the ministry said Hezbollah had launched an "unprovoked" attack on Israel earlier on Sunday and has continued to target Israeli civilians despite the cease-fire. The ministry added that Hezbollah's actions are directed by Iran and said Israel "will not tolerate firing at its territory."
The Iranian regime, as always, is lying. Iran’s proxy, Hezbollah, is the one that attacked Israel again this morning, completely unprovoked. Hezbollah constantly fires at Israeli civilians. Even after the ceasefire, Hezbollah has not stopped targeting Israelis. It was Hezbollah

IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir said Lebanon remains the military's "main center of gravity" but that Israel is also preparing for developments on other fronts.
Zamir said the IDF continues to operate in Lebanon through both ground and air operations, adding that recent activity in the Beaufort area was operationally significant and aligned with Israel's war objectives. He said findings above and below ground underscored the strategic importance of the area for Hezbollah's efforts to entrench itself and threaten northern Israel.
Four people were killed in an Israeli strike on the Jabalya refugee camp in northern Gaza, according to medical sources at Al-Shifa Hospital cited by Al Jazeera.
The four deaths add to one person killed earlier in Bani Suheila, east of Khan Yunis, and a person who was critically wounded in reported Israeli fire near a tent encampment behind Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis.
Separately, a 13-year-old boy was killed shortly before midnight in the Batn al-Samin area south of Khan Yunis, while two others died on Sunday from wounds sustained in an attack in Gaza City the previous day, according to Palestinian reports.
