Polymarket Bitcoin Up or Down markets are contracts tied to a particular BTC interval and resolution rule. They are not interchangeable with owning Bitcoin or predicting its daily trend. Read the exact start time, end time, reference source and comparison method before interpreting a price move.
For the broader range of BTC contracts, use our Polymarket Bitcoin guide. This article focuses on short-window mechanics. It does not supply a live trading signal.
Read the actual interval's settlement rule
A September 5, 2026 five-minute contract names Chainlink's BTC/USD TWAP stream and assigns Up when its specified measure is at least the starting reference; otherwise it assigns Down. A January 18 fifteen-minute example instead describes an end-price comparison against the opening price. Read the market you are actually considering, not an old screenshot.
Why TWAP can differ from your Bitcoin chart
TWAP means time-weighted average price. An average over a defined observation period can differ from a single exchange's most recent trade. A sharp late move may change a last-price display more than an average. That is why the reference stream and calculation described in the contract matter.
Imagine a simplified illustration with equally weighted observations of $99,990 and $100,010. Their average is $100,000 even though the last observation is $100,010. This arithmetic illustrates averaging only; it does not recreate the provider's feed or a particular contract's methodology.
If a chart and settlement appear inconsistent, first check the source, timestamp, time zone and observation method. A screenshot from a different exchange at a slightly different instant does not establish a resolution error.
What happens if Bitcoin finishes exactly equal?
Do not guess. The September example linked above includes equality on the Up side. Other contracts can define different comparisons, so preserve the wording of your specific market. “Above” and “greater than or equal to” are not the same condition.
Payout example: the size of the BTC move is not your payout
Suppose you buy 100 Up shares for $0.55 each. Your stake is $55 before costs. If Up wins under normal binary resolution, those shares redeem for $100, a $45 gross profit. If Down wins, they redeem for zero and the stake is lost. Bitcoin rising by a large amount does not increase the contract's fixed winning payout.
At a 55-cent entry, winning slightly more than half the time is not automatically enough. Ignoring costs, the break-even win rate for repeated equal-share bets at that price is 55%. Costs raise the hurdle. This is payoff arithmetic, not an estimate of your chance of winning.
Five-minute versus fifteen-minute markets
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Exact window | A trade in the previous interval is a different contract |
| Remaining time | A delayed signal can arrive after much of the interval has passed |
| Reference method | Do not assume duration alone determines the feed or averaging rule |
| Book depth | Your desired quantity may not fill at the displayed price |
| Fees | Small gross differences can disappear after trading costs |
Use current market fee parameters and the executable order book when evaluating an entry. A screenshot of a probability or a winning result is insufficient for reconstructing net profit.
Why copying Bitcoin wallets needs extra care
A source wallet may buy at the beginning of an interval and sell before you notice it. Replicating the direction later does not replicate the exposure. Record when you first observed the trade and which contract identifier it belongs to. Never infer that “Up” in the next interval is a continuation of the same position.
Our copy-trading bot checklist covers stale-signal rejection and price limits. The manual copy-trading guide explains how to compare your own fills with the leader's.
Before acting on a BTC Up/Down idea
Save the complete rule, check the feed, verify the interval and inspect current depth. Use Alphascope wallet research for context about a source wallet. Broader market news can help explain volatility, but it does not by itself establish an advantage in a five-minute settlement window.
